Former boxer-turned-promoter Floyd Mayweather is not coming to South Africa regardless of the much-publicised King MisuZulu International Boxing Tournament being postponed.
Mayweather was scheduled to attend the tournament billed to take place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday.
TMT Management, who represent the retired billionaire boxer, said despite the postponement, Mayweather will not be coming to South Africa.
“There is no agreement between Floyd and King MisuZulu ka Zwelithini, so he won’t be present at the tournament,” said TMT Management.
The king issued a statement on Sunday stating that he would like to see his late father’s dream come true and to attain the long-standing vision of creating a sustainable ambiance of nurturing future stars and global citizens within communities.
He added that on the day of the tournament, which has been moved to Thursday, he would launch the Bayede Championship Belt. The belt was designed by his late father and will be handed to the winner of the KwaZulu-Natal provincial title.
“I mandated J4Joy to invite the legendary boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather as my guest of honour. He can share my father’s vision and also help with creating an environment where youth can learn to be solid leaders within communities,” reads the king’s statement.
The king was a guest on Sports Night on Metro FM on Monday where he was interviewed by presenter Andile Ncube. However, he failed to answer if he had an agreement with Mayweather, and if indeed a payment was made.
He also failed to explain who authorised a poster that is circulating.
