SA boxing mourning death of another prominent boxer

The South African boxing fraternity is reeling from another death of a boxer following the passing away of former national and world champion Lwandile “The Angel” Sityatha last Friday.

The popular pugilist was rushed to Cecilia Makiwane Hospital, in Mdantsane, East London following a hit and run car accident last week.

Sityatha, 34, passed on at the Mdantsane hospital after succumbing to his injuries while receiving treatment for his injuries.

He is a former South African flyweight, International Boxing Organisation (IBO) and World Boxing Federation (WBF) junior-bantamweight title holder, who has faced many high-ranking opponents in the world of boxing

His last fight was when he lost to reigning SA bantamweight Ronald Malindi in 2020 and is famous for being the only boxer to have outboxed and outfoxed current national flyweight champion Jackson “M3” Chauke.

Sityatha boasts a professional record of 24 wins, with seven knockouts, four defeats and a draw.

Amongst the world renowned fighters he has traded leather with is Filipino boxer Ernesto Saulong in a 12-round fight. He ended the 2014 calendar year with wins over tough Filipino boxers Michael Dasmarinas and Edrin Dapudong by split decisions.

In the past few months, the Mzansi fisticuffs sport lost lightweight boxer Simiso Buthelezi, who landed in a coma after suffering brain injury during a fight; junior bantamweight fighter Siphiwe Pamana following a car accident; and former IBO and SA junior-flyweight champion Mhikiza Myekeni, after being diagnosed with cancer.
