Highly rated Mzansi boxer Sikho “Sequence” Nqothole is out to prove that he is ready for a world title shot in the near future when he battles Jonas Matheus of Namibia.
Nqothole is set to trade leather with Matheus in a junior bantamweight international fight at Box Camp Booysens on December 9 in the main event of Ringside Rumble.
The Mthatha-born boxer is determined to use the fight as preparation for what he hopes will come his way next year, a defence of his World Boxing Organisation global junior-bantamweight title.
Nqothole believes a successful defence of the title he won against Denmark Quibido from the Philippines in a ESPN Africa tournament last year will see him shoot up the rankings and into the picture for a world title shot.
Nqothole is on a quest for world stardom and is convinced he has what it takes to challenge for the biggest straps but he can only get there by beating whoever he faces.
“This might not be the big fight that I was personally hoping for but it’s still another opportunity to show that I’m more than ready for bigger and better things,” Nqothole told Sunday World.
“I don’t know much about my opponent but obviously I will give him the respect that I always give to all of my opponents. However, I’m convinced that this guy won’t be a match for me.”
Nqothole, who is trained by former SA bantamweight champion Phumzile “Sweet Chocolate” Matyhila, has registered 17 wins with 10 stoppages against two losses.
He defeated Boonrueang Phayom from Thailand in his last fight in May and is now on winning run of six bouts since his last defeat to Sabelo Ngebiyana.
“I will sit down with my team to plan the way forward for next year after this fight, but I know what I want and I hope everything goes accordingly,” added Nqothole.
