Strydom sets sights on becoming oldest jockey to win the ‘July’

Veteran star jockey Piere Strydom has his eyes fixed on becoming the oldest jockey ever to win the Durban July.

Fifty-seven-year old Strydom has trotted more than 5 500 winners throughout his career and has hinted that he would be going into retirement about a year ago.

However, See It Again came into his life when the connections were looking for a jockey to ride the son of Twice Over in the Splashout Cape Derby this year.

Strydom took the challenge and to date, they have produced a flying finish to inflict defeat on the champion colt Charles Dickens.

The jockey was back in the saddle when See It Again wrapped up a perfect July preparation with a smooth win at the end of May.

Strydom is no stranger to winning the “July”, he has won it four times. He is now looking at becoming only the fourth person to both ride and train a Durban July winner.

See It Again will carry the number seven saddle cloth on Saturday.
