Tragedy strikes again as another Comrades runner dies

Another athlete who participated in the Comrades Marathon between Pietermaritzburg and Durban on Sunday has been confirmed to have died.

Phakamile Tshiza of the Adventist Running Club collapsed at Drummond and was later certified dead. Tshiza’s death follows that of Hollywoodbets Athletics Club member Mzamo Mthembu who collapsed during the race in Pinetown.

Mthembu was rushed to Westville Hospital where he died later that day.

Further reports indicate that a total of 74 other runners were transported to various hospitals around the province for emergency treatment.

Charne’ Bosman, a former women’s winner, is also reportedly in hospital after she felt sick and collapsed during the race.

Comrades Marathon Association chairperson Mqondisi Ngcobo sent the organisation’s condolences to the families and friends of the deceased athletes. “We will continue to have them in our thoughts and offer them our support as they deal with their loss,” said Ngcobo.
The Comrades Marathon made a much-anticipated return for its 95th edition on Sunday. Its return followed a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic which placed strict restrictions on sporting events in a move to control the spread of the virus.

More than 15 000 runners took part in the marathon at the weekend as they attempted to finish the over 89km race, one of the world’s gruelling races, at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium.

In 2019, 55-year-old Sonnyboy Ngobeni, a runner who was representing a Limpopo running club, was found dead two days after completing the marathon, which is dubbed the ultimate human race.
