Mosele feels Pirates can break Downs’ stranglehold

Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana star midfielder Goodman Mosele believes that they have the ability and the capacity to end Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance in the new season.

Mosele opened up to Sunday World at the launch of the Buccaneers’ new jersey for the coming season.

Mosele has staked his claim in the Pirates setup after he joined the club at the beginning of last season from Baroka FC. He steadily fought his way into the starting line-up and caught the eyes of the national team selectors, and is now a fully-fledged member of Bafana Bafana.

“The league is not just about Sundowns – it should not be about Sundowns only. There are 15 other teams, and the more matches you win, the more you can win the league. It’s [ending Downs’ dominance is] possible. Sundowns are dominating but if we want to only beat Sundowns and then lose to other teams like Baroka, it will not help. We must compete and beat all the other teams, then we can compete with Sundowns,” said Mosele.

“At the end of the day points will tell if we can stop Sundowns and win the league. That’s why we should collect points from the other teams. We do not play against Sundowns for the whole season – there are no small teams in the PSL any more. We must just work extra hard and get all those three points from the other teams, I am not saying smaller teams,” added the 22-year-old Stilfontein-born midfield workhorse.

“We are getting used to our new coach [Jose Riveiro] bit by bit. He does not know us and vice versa, but we are learning his formations and we are adapting to his tactics. He’s a good coach and the way we are training it’s wonderful. Supporters are fully behind us and that is very encouraging. Competition is tough at Pirates and we hope the new players will settle in quickly into the Pirates culture. Even I had to work hard when I arrived at Pirates.

“I was perturbed as well when I arrived because there all these big names. But I got some advice from former professionals from my township like Brian ‘Dobsy’ Sebapole, who told me to go out there and make a name for myself and not be intimidated by the established players. I arrived and showed them respect but it did not mean that I was scared.”
