Our goal is for our athletes to qualify for Tokyo – ASA

Johannesburg – Athletics South Africa (ASA) is working around the clock to make sure more athletes qualify for Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

After the 2021 African Senior Championships to be held in Nigeria were cancelled last week, ASA created four events for athletes such as Reabetswe Moloi to make their mark and book their tickets to Tokyo.

“These events will be funded by our provinces. The common goal is for our athletes to qualify. Nigeria pulling out gave us an opportunity because with the Covid-19 pandemic, we were not sure what the situation in Lagos was,” said ASA president James Moloi.

The first event started last weekend in Pretoria and will end on the 19th.

The second one also led yesterday and was hosted by the Western Province Athletics.

Boland Athletics will be in charge of the third event on 19 and 26 June. Potchefstroom will round off the series on the 26th of this month.

“Caster Semenya is in Europe,” said Moloi. “We want her to qualify for the 5 000m by all means. In Europe, she will be competing against Kenyan runners, Ethiopians and Europeans. That will give her a much-needed challenge and we’re very confident that she will make it.”
