Rassie van der Dussen announces retirement from international cricket

South African cricketer Rassie van der Dussen has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing to a close a chapter in his career with the Proteas.

In a heartfelt statement, van der Dussen expressed both pride and gratitude for the journey that saw him represent his country at the highest level.

“To have played for my country has been the greatest honour of my life,” he said.

Wearing the Proteas jersey, he said, required a level of resilience and dedication.

‘We lived, breathed the game’

For van der Dussen (37), the privilege of representing South Africa made every challenge worthwhile.

Raised in a cricket-loving household alongside his brothers, he described how deeply the game was embedded in his upbringing.

“We lived and breathed the game together, and to be the one to carry our family name onto the international stage was a responsibility I was proud to embrace,” he said.

‘Grateful for the support’

Van der Dussen also paid tribute to the domestic structures that supported his rise, particularly the Lions franchise and its leadership. He credited their unwavering backing and support as the foundation of his international success.

He extended his thanks to Cricket South Africa and key figures within the setup, acknowledging the opportunities he was given to wear the Proteas jersey.

A deeply personal moment in his statement was reserved for his wife, Lara.

“You have been by my side every single step of the way, my biggest cheerleader,” he added.

Salute to fans

Van der Dussen also reflected on the connection he shared with fans, recalling iconic moments such as walking out to bat at Wanderers Stadium to the roar of the crowd.

“Those moments of connection are difficult to describe, and those emotions will stay with me forever,” he said.

Despite stepping away from international cricket, van der Dussen confirmed that his journey in the sport is far from over.

He will continue playing domestically for the Lions and is committed to mentoring the next generation of South African cricketers.

Offering advice to aspiring players, he emphasised perseverance and belief.

“Dream big and give absolutely everything you have to achieve your dreams, the fact that I have been able to live out my ultimate dream should serve as proof that you can too.”

“I love South Africa, and I love cricket. Thank you for everything.”
