SA’s top athletes lacing up for annual Thembisa race

South Africa’s top runners including Lebo Phalula, Glenrose Xaba, Elroy Gelant, Karabo Mailula and Chris Mhlanga are expected to take part in the Thembisa 10km race.

The race, which comprises one mile and 10km run and walk, will take place at the Moses Molelekwa Arts Centre next to Makhulong Stadium on October 29.

The organisers expect 3 000 participants who will take to the streets of the sprawling Ekurhuleni township.

Xaba is currently the hottest property on the local road running circles, shattering some of the records standing in her way.

Phalula, a popular figure in road running, has also confirmed her participation. She will be joined by Mailula, a 10km cross country champion and Olympian Gelant.

Entries are open and available online at www.thembisamile.co.za or www.peaktiming.co.za on a first come, first serve basis, and close at midnight on October 22 or when the maximum race capacity has been reached.

The race is open to a total of 3 000 entries, with 2 500 entries available for the 10km road race and 500 for the one mile race.

A registration fee for the 10km race is R150 for Athletics South Africa-licensed athletes, while unlicensed runners will pay an additional R60 for a temporary licence.

A registration fee for the one mile race is R50 for Athletics South Africa athletes, with unlicensed athletes required to pay an additional R20 for a temporary licence.

The registration fee excludes the online service fee and late registration will cost R170 for the 10km and R60 for the one mile race.


For elite runners, the race offers a total prize purse of R100 000.

The men’s and women’s 10km winners will each take home R5 000 while the invitational one mile winners will each pocket R4 000.

SPAR vouchers will be given to top three boys and girls in the Under-10, Under-13, and Under-five age group categories for the one mile race.

SPAR goodie bags will also be given to the first 2 000 entries and all registered finishers will receive bronze medals.

The race will be streamed live on the Vision View TV app from 7am to 12pm.
