Following their surprise 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth last weekend, Arsenal will be looking to return to winning ways and come out guns blazing when they host Liverpool in the English Premier League at the Emirates Stadium at 6:30pm today.
The showdown between the Gunners and the Reds is arguably the biggest game of the season so far, as it will see two teams that will be hoping to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title.
It doesn’t get any more difficult for Arsenal than facing a red-hot Liverpool side that has won seven league games and is coming fresh off a 2-1 win over Chelsea last weekend.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is also facing an increasing list of injuries and the suspension of star centre-back William Saliba, who was shown a red card against Bournemouth.
It goes without saying that Saliba has been the heart of Arsenal’s defence and an ever-present in the Premier League, the Champions League, and the FA Cup since last season.
The Frenchman was only rested in the Carabao Cup fixtures.
He has been brilliant for Arsenal at the back and he boasts the best success rate for tackles in the Premier League this season
The likes of captain Martin Odegaard, Takahiro Tomiyasu, and Kieran Tierney are still out injured, while Bukayo Saka is doubtful after picking up a hamstring injury on international duty with England.
Even through the difficult period, Arsenal’s mood and approach to the game against the Reds are expected to be positive following the home side’s narrow 1-0 home victory over Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday night in the Champions League.
Liverpool themselves won their Champions League outing in Germany against RB Leipzig, where they produced a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
The Reds have been grinding results under new manager Arne Slot. They are currently on 21 points – four points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table.
Unlike Arteta, Slot will only have to deal with the absence of veteran goalkeeper Alisson Becker; however, second-choice shot-stopper Caomihin Kelleher has stepped up and held the fort admirably well for Liverpool.
Excited to see this clash! Arsenal’s squad has really stepped up this season, and it feels like the confidence Arteta’s instilled is paying off. But going up against Liverpool won’t be easy—Salah and Nunez are on fire. This match might set the tone for the title race. Visit Us Telkom University Jakarta
