During their halcyon days, if one mentioned Kaizer Chiefs as the underdogs against a team like Sekhukhune United, they would be told they needed to get their head examined.
This is how bad things have turned out in recent years at Amakhosi, the most successful club in SA football history.
This afternoon, Chiefs go into their Betway Premiership encounter against Ba Bina Noko at the Moses Mabhida Stadium as the underdogs.
In fact, Sekhukhune, who are riding the crest of a wave, are expected to clobber the embattled Chiefs. Sekhukhune have been notching some impressive results, which saw them sneak onto number three position on the log table.
Coached by Lehlohonolo Seema, the Limpopo side has played five straight matches without a loss, registering 13 points out of a possible 15. In their last match, they hammered SuperSport United 3-0.
This is while Amakhosi have struggled to breathe air under new coach Nasreddine Nabi. Last week, they were nailed 1-0 by Golden Arrows, meaning that they are number six, after winning five matches in 13 rounds.
Amakhosi supporters are blaming the club for not signing quality players who are capable of wearing the Chiefs jersey.
Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung junior addressed the connotation that they will not be signing new players in this current January window period, adding that it would be foolish of them not to beef up their squad.
“I think it’s always a sensitive topic because we would love as a team to be able to be transparent and speak to the people,” Motaung said this past week.
“I mean, our people and fans are the most important people and stakeholders, and we respect them. I want to just take away this connotation that the club is not doing anything and does not respect the supporters.
“They are everything to us. We do everything for them, and it would be foolish for us not to be doing anything in this window,” he said.
“But we understand that we also have a June window, so we’re preparing on two folds because it is short term. We also have to plan for next season. So we’re taking the steps that we can, and we’re working very tightly behind the scenes.”
