Bafana Bafana held to uninspiring goalless draw by Namibia

Bafana Bafana and Namibia played to a goalless draw during their friendly match at an almost empty Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors almost broke the deadlock in the 24th minute, when Prins Tjiueza broke the defensive line and found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Veli Mothwa, but Monnapule Saleng was quick to recover with a well-timed tackle.

Tjiueza then followed up with a shot, but defender Siyanda Xulu was equal to the task and cleared the ball off the line.

Bafana had the first sniff at goal, when Burnley striker Lyle Foster played a lovely pass for Bathusi Aubaas but his venomous shot was saved by goalkeeper Lloyd Kazapua, which fell into the path of Kodisang, who could not connect with the ball and missed it completely.

At the stroke of half-time, Saleng had two chances that could have easily put Bafana in front but both sides went into the break all square in what was a relatively uninspiring first half.

Broos made three changes going into the second half, which saw Grant Kekana, Mlungisi Mbunjana and France based striker Lebo Mothiba.

The introduction of the trio changed the complexion of the game, as Bafana kept on knocking on the Namibian door.

South Africa had a penalty shout the 77th minute when Grant Margeman was brought down inside the box, but the referee was not interested.

The ‘mbobo vuleka’ chants grew louder and substitute Kekana almost responded to them, when his headed effort from a free kick by Mamelodi Sundowns teammate Aubrey Modiba was saved out for a corner by Kazapua.

Broos’ men kept on charging forward to look for the winner, but their efforts were not enough as the game ended 0-0.

South Africa will wrap up their international break friendly matches against DR Congo at the same venue on Tuesday evening.
