Bafana coach Hugo Broos not impressed with national team fans

Despite finishing their international friendly matches on a positive note, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is not impressed with South African soccer supporters.

Bafana produced a narrow 1-0 victory over central African side DR Congo at the Orlando Stadium on Tuesday night, thanks to England-based striker Lyle Foster’s first-half strike.

It was Foster’s fourth international goal, which means Bafana are now unbeaten in their last nine games in all competitions.

Unlike their uninspiring goalless draw against Namibia at the weekend, where the stadium was half empty, the turnout on Tuesday was decent.

However, many people who turned up for the match were those backing DR Congo.

After the match, Broos voiced his disappointment at how home supporters did not show up to rally behind his charges.

“I had a feeling that we played a hard game and it’s a bit disappointing that, again, when you looked at the stadium, there were more supporters for Congo,” he told Safa media.

“So, I hope that in future we will have more supporters coming to the stadium to support the national team. There was a crowed behind us [bench] that was giving Congo more belief and that helped them grow into the game.

“We had some moments that were very difficult and had needed them [fans] but they were not there, they were not enough.”

Bafana last enjoyed playing in front of a large crowd when they hosted Morocco at the FNB Stadium in June. They beat the World Cup semi-finalists 2-1 in front of 56 000 supporters.

Having already qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2024, Broos expects fans to come out in numbers and back the team ahead of World Cup qualifiers in November.
