Bafana defender Mobbie happy to link-up with Mmodi

Bafana Bafana defender Nyiko Mobbie is happy to have linked up with his childhood friend Pule Mmodi for friendly matches against Namibia and DR Congo.

Mmodi was selected to be part of Bafana when national football team coach Hugo Broos announced his squad this week.

Mmodi replaced Mamelodi Sundowns’ twinkle-toed midfielder Themba Zwane, who suffered a head injury in the MTN8 semi-final match against Kaizer Chiefs at the weekend.

Mmodi’s career has turned for the best after he signed with Amakhosi from Golden Arrows in the off-season.

He joins the likes of Mobbie, who has established himself as a regular since Broos took over as Bafana coach in 2021.

“Everything is going okay and I think we are preparing the way the coach wants us to,” Mobbie told Safa media.

“I am happy for Pule Mmodi because he is doing very well. We grew up together at the Free State Stars development and that’s how long I have known him.

He said representing South Africa is not an easy task, noting that he just needs to listen to what the coach wants and to keep on giving his best on match day.

“After the Liberia game, the coach was very happy with the way I defended. We have to perform against Namibia to get the result.”

Broos’ charges are on the up and have gone seven matches without a defeat.

Their confidence was boosted by the impressive 2-1 victory in their last match, the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the FNB Stadium in June.

They will face Namibia at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday at 3pm before wrapping up the Fifa calendar week with a fixture against DR Congo on Tuesday at the same venue.
