Banyana players focused on Wafcon title defence after pay dispute is resolved

Following last weekend’s threats of downing tools and boycotting training, Banyana Banyana players have regained focus and are diligently preparing to defend their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) trophy in Morocco.

South Africa’s senior women’s national team, the reigning African champions, will start their title defence against Ghana on Monday night.

The tournament begins on Saturday.

The SA Football Association’s CEO Lydia Monyepao and deputy president Linda Zwane stepped in and resolved the standoff on Saturday morning between the players and Safa.

The parties were able to come to an agreement on financial terms before the tournament.

Banyana’s midfield workhorse Regina Mogolola believes that the team can only defend the Wafcon title they won in 2022 if they work together.

Mogolola was speaking after an energy-sapping training session in Casablanca, Morocco, where the Sasol-sponsored African Champions are continuing with their preparations.

“We are feeling good, and we are prepared,” said Mogolola.

“We know what it will take to defend our title, and we will have to work as a team — play for one another, support each other, and fight for one another.

“So, teamwork will win the day, unlike in tennis, where you are on your own.”

Mogolola’s seven-year absence

Coach Desiree Ellis’ team will be based in Oujda for the Wafcon, which is scheduled to take place from July 5 to July 26.

Mogolola is excited to return to the Banyana set-up after a seven-year absence. She won silver in 2018 in Ghana with Banyana in the same competition.

“It’s nice to come and learn again. I am excited, and I am looking forward to representing the country,” she said.

“I also appreciate the opportunity to receive another call-up, but it’s important to work hard and not give up when faced with challenges.”

The South Africans will leave Casablanca on Friday and head to Oujda, where they have their base camp.

On July 7, they will play their first match of the tournament against Ghana. After that, they will play Tanzania on July 11 and Mali on July 14.

The Honneur Stadium in Oujda will host all of the Group C games.
