Betway Premiership promotion play-offs postponed

The Betway Premiership Promotion/Relegation Play-Offs will not start on Tuesday, May 27, as scheduled due to some hanging matters that directly involve the affected clubs.

Among the pressing matters that have forced this postponement is the pending Betway Premiership league match involving the bottom side, SuperSport United, and Golden Arrows.

United, who are lying in the 15th position with 26 points, have only 45 minutes—one last chance—to avoid participating in the play-offs after the league took the decision that the abandoned match against Arrows on February 2 be played this coming Thursday, May 29, for the remainder of the 45 minutes of the second half.

The match was abandoned due to power failures at the Lucas Moripe Stadium while the two sides were deadlocked to a 1-1 draw.

Currently it is not clear as to which club between SuperSport United and Cape Town City will finish in the 15th spot and go all the way to fight for their elite league status via the play-offs.

Should Matsatsantsa a Pitori secure a victory against Abafana’be Sthende, then they will occupy the 14th position with 29 points while pushing Cape Town City, who have since wrapped up their league season with 27 points, to the 15th position, which will see the Cape side forced to try to redeem themselves via the play-offs route.

Chamber yet to decide Spurs’ protest

Meanwhile, the league’s Dispute Resolution Chamber is still to decide on the Cape Town Spurs’ protest against the Motsepe Foundation Championship winners, Durban City, whom they accuse of fielding improperly registered player Saziso Magawana.

Last week Tuesday, the league dismissed similar charges with costs which were brought forward by JDR Stars.

It remains to be seen if Spurs, who have since been relegated to the ABC Motsepe League, will be able to convince DRC with what they have described as “concrete” evidence about Magawana’s legality at the KwaZulu-Natal side.
