Bucs’ second goal against the Citizens remains a topic for debate

Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler believes that Orlando Pirates’ winning goal should not have been allowed.

This after the Buccaneers romped to an impressive 2-0 victory over the Citizens at the Orlando Stadium on Tuesday night.

The winning goal in the second half by Patrick Maswanganyi was controversial and it remains unclear if the entire circumference of the ball crossed the line.

Pirates were leading 1-0 via a Zakhele Lepasa cracker when Maswanganyi latched onto a cross from the left and rolled the ball into the net.

It is not clear whether by the time City goalkeeper Darren Keet smothered the ball, it had crossed the line.

At that time, City were staging a comeback and troubling the Buccaneers, but the debatable goal took the wind out of their sails.

The incident resulted in calls for the implementation of the video assistant referee in South African football to grow louder.

Speaking to Supersport TV after the match, Tinkler said: “Their second goal, according to me, was not a goal.

“We allow this to happen week in and week out without any consequences, what are we going to do? We march on to the next game, there’s nothing we can do.”

However, he praised Pirates for their speedy attacking style of play, saying the Sea Robbers are a “very good team in attack”.

“If you look at the goals they have already scored this season, offensively they are well-structured and organised, and they play with a lot of speed.

“Our plan was to press them hard and high, and we did that very well. Defensively, we let ourselves down. We got caught every time there was a long ball, and they started creating moments from that.

“Zakhele Lepasa’s goal was great, it was a great turn and a great finish. I cannot fault anyone on that one.

“Our response in second-half was much better, as well as the changes we made. We had them on the backfoot.

“To be honest, we had most of the possession and the territory, they were only catching us on the counter.

“We just have to take our chances in the next games. I cannot fault my players, I was happy with what I saw in the second-half against Pirates.”
