Orbit College are one step closer to achieving their goal of getting promoted to the Betway Premiership, which they could do this afternoon when they play Cape Town City in the promotion/relegation playoffs final.
Having recently tested the Citizens in the first game of this playoff series, which resulted in a draw, Orbit is fully aware that a victory this afternoon will secure their place in the more lucrative Betway Premiership for the 2025–2026 campaign.
The match will be played at Olympia Park in Rustenburg, North West, at 3pm.
The North West-based side occupies the top position with five points and harbours high hopes of elevating the professional stature of the beautiful game in the province.
City, having finished their league season in 15th place in the Betway Premiership and currently occupying second place with two points, recognises the challenges they face in maintaining their top-flight standing.
Fans hope for an Orbit victory
In addition to having a game in hand against the third-place Casric Stars, whom they will play on June 30, a victory over Orbit this afternoon would put them level on points.
Fans are desperately hoping for an Orbit victory this afternoon to guarantee their spot in the elite league, as the North West has not had a representative since Platinum Stars’ demise a few years ago.
Orbit is in a strong position because, before their return leg against Casric at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in Kwa-Mhlanga, Mpumalanga, where they narrowly defeated the latter 1-0, they had drawn twice against Casric Stars and the same Cape Town City.
Siyabulela Mabele scored the only goal after his deflected shot confused Casric Stars’ goalkeeper Emile Lako.
After only eight years since the club’s founding, it is unclear if Orbit, led by coach Pogisho Makhoye, will win today’s match and possibly pop the champagne to celebrate their long-held goal of promotion.
