Kaizer Chiefs have explained the role of former head coach Arthur Zwane and provided a clear update on the future of veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune at the club.
Zwane was demoted from his coaching responsibilities at the beginning of last season. He has been out of the scene, which has left many people wondering what his role at Amakhosi is.
Speaking to the media after the new 2024/25 jersey launch on Thursday, Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr said Zwane now holds the senior academy coach title and forms part of the scouting department.
Senior academy coach
“Coach Arthur [Zwane], his title is senior academy coach, his task is very important. He works with the DDC side, under 19, 17, 15, and 13. This is in order to be able to provide a blanket training philosophy for our teams,” Motaung Jr said.
“So, his role in time is to spend time with each of these groups. To make sure that we have uniformity, and we can continue our progression and pathway. He also forms part of our scouting department, so his role is very clear.
Motaung Jr also provided a clear update on the roles of former technical team members. These are Dillon Sheppard, Aubrey Mathibe, and fitness coach Muzi Maluleka.
“So, we have Dillon Sheppard as an assistant to coach Vela [Khumalo] in the DDC team. He will also form part of the scouting team.
“We have Muzi Maluleka, who will also be our fitness coach at the reserve team. And of course, Aubrey Mathibe will be our DDC goalkeeper coach. So they are part of us in the academy. And they are looking forward to next season,” he added.
On Itumeleng Khune
The club’s sporting director spoke on the future of Khune, on where he will end up next season. He insisted that the legendary goalkeeper is an integral member of the club.
“I think as time goes on we will be able to divulge the next steps with Itu. But he’s very much a very important part of this family, this organisation, and this team.
“We assessed everything, and we’ve sat down with Itu. And we see him playing a very, very valuable role within this institution,” Motaung Jr added.
