Chiefs on a winning streak while Downs stretch lead at the top

Kaizer Chiefs have recorded their second DStv Premiership win in a row after a hard fought 2-0 victory against 10-men Stellenbosch FC at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.

In the earlier fixture, Mamelodi Sundowns also produced yet another easy win and stretched their lead at the top of the log standings following a comfortable 2-0 win over Polokwane City.

Amakhosi went into the game high in confidence and were desperate to make it two wins in a row ahead of their all-important MTN8 semi-final first leg against Sundowns.

It was end-to-end stuff in the opening stages of the game, with the home creating more goal scoring opportunities and causing more threats in front of goal.

Chiefs shot-stopper Brandon Peterson was the busiest of the two goalkeepers, as Stellies were the brightest of the two sides and went into half-time goalless.

Moments into the second half, Pule Mmodi grabbed the opening goal in spectacular fashion when he found the back of the net with a stunning strike from a long way out after some good combination play with Mduduzi Mdantsane.

Stellies were reduced to 10-men when captain Devin Titus was sent for an early shower when he got his second yellow card of the after a dangerous tackle on Thatayaone Ditlhokwe.

The numerical disadvantage did not faze the home side, as they kept on knocking on the Chiefs door and posing a threat in front of goal, with Peterson keeping Chiefs in the game with a couple of brilliant saves.

Substitute Christian Saile delivered the final blow when he found the far post and scored an excellent header from a well-worked free kick from Mduduzi Shabalala in the 88th minute.

The Winelands-side rued their missed chances in the first half as they suffered their third defeat of the season, while Amakhosi enjoyed back-to-back league victories.

In matches elsewhere, Cape Town Spurs’ struggles in their return to the SA elite continue to persist as they lost their fifth game on the trot after losing 3-1 to Moroka Swallows.

Richards Bay got their second point of the season after coming from behind to play a 1-1 draw against Sekhukhune United.

AmaZulu got their first goal and win of the season when they edged past TS Galaxy 1-0. Royal AM got the better of Chippa United in their five-goal thriller, as they beat them 3-2.
