Kaizer Chiefs are getting ready to play their match against Cape Town Spurs on Wednesday night behind closed doors after they were penalised by the league’s disciplinary committee for their supporters’ unruly behavior in three of their matches this season.
Chiefs will face the Capetonians at the FNB Stadium and there will be no supporters allowed into the stadium as part of Amakhosi’s punishment by the league prosecutor Zola Majavu. Only players, officials, members of the media and key staff will be permitted into the stadium.
After a 10-day break, Amakhosi will play two matches over the coming seven days. First up, it will be the crucial locked-out Spurs match. Interim coach Cavin Johnson will be in the dugout for his second match in charge, against a Spurs side who have their tails up after securing their first three points of the season against Orlando Pirates last Wednesday.
The PSL newbies will be hoping to make it six points from the two Soweto giants in a space of seven days, but Amakhosi will be equally motivated, as they seek a morale booster ahead of the all-important Soweto Derby on Saturday.
Chiefs will be forced to make one change in midfield as Sibongiseni “Ox” Mthethwa is suspended for the match, having picked up four cautions this season already.
So, Johnson will need to look at other combinations in midfield while ensuring that players give it their all and that they’re not already focused on the much-awaited Soweto derby on Saturday.
The Urban Warriors, as Spurs are affectionately known, are rooted at the bottom of the log at number 16 with three points after nine matches. Amakhosi are in an unfamiliar 10th position after the same number of matches, with 11 points in the kitty.
