Chiefs to play without fans after receiving stadium lockout

Kaizer Chiefs will play their next DStv Premiership league match against Cape Town Spurs in an empty stadium after being handed a “stadium lockout” by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) on Tuesday.

Chiefs appeared before the PSL disciplinary committee on charges of spectator misbehavior after they were knocked out of the Carling Black Label Knockout by AmaZulu at the FNB Stadium more than a week ago.

Amakhosi were found guilty by the DC after a section of disgruntled fans pelted former head coach Molefi Ntseki with missiles – which was the fourth incident of spectator violence from Chiefs supporters since the new season began in August.

Guilty as charged

“They [Chiefs] were served with a charge sheet and they appeared before the DC, where they pleaded guilty and they were subsequently found guilty as charged,” PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu said.

“With regards to sanction, it must be borne in mind that a few weeks ago they were found guilty by the PSL DC on similar charges and an amount of R50 000 was suspended.

“There was a further automatic lockout in respect of the next home game, which was also suspended for the period of six months.”

Majavu disclosed that Amakhosi also face a suspended fine of up to R300 000 for the events that unfolded against Usuthu, adding that they will have to play their next game in a neutral venue.

Next fixture at a neutral venue

“With regard to the current transgression, they were fined a monetary fine of R300 000, which is wholly suspended for another period of six months on condition that during the period of suspension, they are not found guilty of the same offence again.

“They were also ordered to play their next home game at a neutral venue should they re-offend and be found guilty during the period of suspension.

“They were subsequently directed to carry the costs of today’s seating.”

The violent scenes led to the sacking of Ntseki over a week ago and he was soon replaced with Cavin Johnson as interim coach.

Johnson did not start on a high note, succumbing to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to in-form Golden Arrows at the weekend.
