Coach Mokwena wanted one more victory for Sundowns

Even though they failed to wrap it up in style in front of their legions of passionate supporters by defeating Cape Town City on Tuesday night, Mamelodi Sundowns players and officials still celebrated with fans after the match.

The Brazilians were held to a 0-0 draw by The Citizens, and that put a bit of a damper on the already celebrating home supporters at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

They were rejoicing because they have already won the 2022/23 DStv Premiership title – their sixth league title in a row, with six matches remaining to play.

“It would have been nice to win the game in front of our supporters, but you cannot win all the matches,” said Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena after the match.

“Even though it was a draw, I liked the performance because there was intensity, we moved the ball around very well and we created a lot of scoring opportunities.

“I am also happy with the clean sheet because we have been conceding a lot of goals. I was happy with how we responded to the game.

“It was a tough game, they were very difficult opponents with good players on the pitch. A very good game of football and a lot better than the performances of Coton Sport and Al Hilal.

“The differences is that in Sudan, we scored and in the last match against Coton Sport, we scored two goals. That is the nature of football. You can’t win them all. I was also happy as to how we dealt with counter-attacks.”

Sundowns’ next match is against relegation candidates Swallows FC on Sunday at the Dobsonville Stadium.
