The Betway Premiership is in its penultimate stage, and it is do or die for most teams in the bottom half, including Kaizer Chiefs, as they have the last chance to secure a top-eight finish.
However, standing in coach Nasreddine Nabi and Amakhosi’s way is a Polokwane City that will also be desperate for a positive result to cement a place inside the top-eight.
Amakhosi will host Rise and Shine in their last league match of the season at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, and defender Dillan Solomons says this may be their biggest game of the season.
“It doesn’t look too good, but we know what we need to do … We must win that game on the weekend and that’s our only focus,” Solomons said during a press conference at the Chiefs Village in Naturena on Wednesday.
“You can categorise it [the game against Polokwane] as one of the biggest games of the season. It’s like a cup final for us. We know how important this game is.”
One would have expected the Glamour Boys to return to league action guns blazing following their Nedbank Cup triumph, but it was not the case as they played to a frustrating 1-1 draw against Sekhukhune United last Saturday.
Chiefs are winless in the last eight league matches, with their last victory coming against Magesi FC on 4 March.
Solomons, who has been a regular for Nabi in recent matches, suggested finishing outside the top-eight will mean they had a disastrous season, despite ending the club’s decade-long trophy drought.
“Obviously, we had goals for the season, and we haven’t reached them in the league, and for us, that is a downward spiral. Winning the Nedbank Cup has been fantastic, and it’s something we’ve been trying to achieve for a long time.
“But for us to get in the top eight will mean we’ve had a successful season. Not getting in the top eight, I wouldn’t say it’s not successful, but it’s not what we want. We want to be in every competition next season.
“That was the goal, to try and get into the top eight, get into Caf, and try to win a trophy. That’s what we were aiming for. For us, not getting into the top eight will be a disaster,” Solomons added.
