After failing to retain their DStv Premiership status in the Premier Soccer League promotion-relegation play-offs, Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids has apologised to the supporters for a disappointing 2022/23 league campaign.
Maritzburg were held to a goalless draw by Spurs during their final do or die match at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night.
The team of choice needed nothing more than a victory to retain their topflight football status, but it was not meant to be as the Urban Warriors held their nerve and got themselves a crucial point to confirm their historic return to the premiership.
Speaking to SuperSport Tv during a post-match interview, Davids said his side displayed a poor performance and let the supporters down.
“It was an extremely sad day that the players could not step up to the atmosphere and could not give the supporters the result they wanted,” said Davids.
“Our season was extremely disappointing; from the beginning we were on the bottom of the log right until the end. We got to this point, but it was not enough, we fought all the way to the last day, we filled up the stadium and the supporters did everything and we couldn’t do it in the end.
“A huge apology to the supporters and on behalf of the entire squad, we let you down in a huge way, being bottom of the league the entire season is just not good enough.”
The Kwazulu-Natal outfit will now have to prepare for life in the National First Division (NFD), where they will compete in the Motsepe Foundation Championship next season.
They will join Marumo Gallants, who were automatically relegated after finishing number 16 on the log standings.
