‘For one day, please put your clubs aside and support Sundowns’

Ronwen Williams has urged all South African football fans to rally behind Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of their crucial CAF Champions League clash against Esperance.

The call for support is also directed to Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates supporters.

Sundowns host Esperance in what will be a “must-win and not concede” Champions League semifinal second-leg encounter at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Friday night.

The game will get under way at 8pm.

It goes without saying that the Masandawana need all the support they can get, as they find themselves in a make-or-break situation in the continental competition.

Sundowns trail the tie against the four-time Champions League champions after losing 1-0 in the first leg in Tunisia last weekend.

Having missed out on playing in the final after falling short in the same stage of the competition last season, Williams has since asked all local football fans to put their differences aside and support the Brazilians.

Let’s put our differences aside

“I would like to urge the Masandawana fans and South Africa as a whole to get behind us, not only the Yellow Nation, because we need each and every one,” Williams said.

“Let us do it for South Africa and our football because we are up there now with the best. So, let Sundowns go all the way with your support, because it’s only going to uplift South African football.

“Like we have done at the Afcon [Africa Cup of Nations] with Bafana Bafana, we set the bar very high, so let South Africa get behind Sundowns.

“For one day, if you can put your personal clubs aside and just get behind the team and support us because we need you.

“We are not only doing it for ourselves but for the next generation and generations to come.”

Sundowns last participated in the final of the Champions League back in 2016, when they ultimately went on to lift the prestigious trophy.
