Injury-prone Al Ahly striker Percy Tau finds his scoring boots

Bafana Bafana striker Percy Tau scored his second goal of the season for Al Ahly in the Egyptian Premier League on Monday night.

Al Ahly eased past Al lttihad of Alexandria by three goals to nil, to increase their lead at the top of the log by four points ahead of reigning champions Zamalek.

The Lion of Judah, as he is known, was on target in his second appearance of the season, registering two goals in two matches. The former Brighton & Hove Albion striker tapped in a rebound in the 12th minute, after Ahmed Abdel Kader’s shot was cleared in his path.

The return of the 28-year-old talisman could prove a huge boost for national team coach Hugo Broos, after leaving him out of the previous friendly matches against Mozambique and Angola due to a lack of match fitness.

In November, Broos expressed his concern about Tau’s situation prior to his return from injury. “I hope Percy Tau starts playing games regularly again. And if that is not possible, I think it is better for him to start looking for another club,” Broos said at the time.

“In the past year, he picked up injuries and played few matches. Since the end of June, he has played only 22 minutes and that is not good for him at all. A player loses the rhythm of the game by sitting on the bench, and Tau is not that kind of a player who must sit on the bench, but that is the situation now.”

Bafana take on Liberia in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in March 2023.

Meanwhile, The Red Devils were on Monday drawn in Group B of the CAF Champions League with Mamelodi Sundowns, which will see the two teams battle it out once again in the group stages, after Masandawana completed a double against the Egyptian giants last season.

Al Ahly welcome Future FC on Friday at the Al-Salam Stadium Cairo.
