It never rains but it pours for Kaizer Chiefs

In a gloomy day at the Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammarsdale, Durban, rain poured even harder for Kaizer Chiefs as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Golden Arrows on Saturday afternoon.

Amakhosi remain number eight in the log standings with 11 points after 10 games, while high-flying Arrows jumped to position two with 20 points – four points behind DStv Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

It was the first game in charge for newly appointed interim coach Cavin Johnson, who took the hot seat to replace the embattled Molefi Ntseki early this week.

Johnson did not make many changes to the side that lost 1-0 to AmaZulu in the Carling Knockout last weekend, with S’fiso Hlanti walking straight back into the starting line-up after returning from injury and wobbly goalkeeper Brandon Peterson being preferred over Itumeleng Khune between the sticks.

Arrows landed the first blow in the 20th minute, when Knox Mutizwa found the back of the net following yet another goalkeeping blunder from Peterson – who somewhat could not sort out his feet inside the box after a back pass from Thatayaone Ditlhokwe.

It did not take long for Amakhosi to respond, as Hlanti found the equaliser with a leaping header after a well-worked free kick from Edson Castillo in the 23rd minute.

Amakhosi gained momentum and created enough goal scoring opportunities, but their efforts did not bear any fruit and went into half-time level.

Moments into the second half, Mutizwa got his brace when scored in the 54th minute and took his goal tally to two in the league.

Johnson made substitutions and introduced Tebogo Potsane, Dillan Solomons, George Matlou and big striker Jasond Gonzalez, but it was not enough to salvage a point and walked away empty handed.

Chiefs will entertain winless Cape Town Spurs in their next league encounter at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday.
