Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams has dedicated his first league winner’s medal to his former teammate and late friend who passed away in 2023.
Adams clinched his first of probably many league medals with Sundowns when they were officially coronated as the Betway Premiership champions at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday.
Oshwin Andries tribute
Oshwin Andries, who was a towering midfielder, passed away in February 2023 after he was stabbed multiple times during a party in the Western Cape. He died in the arms of his mother in hospital.
“It’s a nice feeling for me to only achieve this [winning the league] in nearly just six months after joining the club. And there are many more to come,” Adams said.
“But everything that I win is dedicated to him, Oswin Andries. This one goes to him, his family, my family, friends, and everyone back in Cape Town.”
Adams, 24, joined the Brazilians during the January transfer window. And he walked straight into the team to perfectly fill in the void left by midfield maestro and captain Themba Zwane.
“Coming here was not easy. And it’s because there are a lot of good players here. I just came here and gave it my best.
CAF Champions League
“There are a lot of players that help me on and off the field. Players such as Ronwen (Williams) and Iqraam (Rayners), Mshishi (Themba Zwane), Grant (Kekana) and (Teboho) Mokoena,” he added.
Having already won the league, Adams and Sundowns will be setting their sights on delivering the CAF Champions League. This is where they will square off against Egyptian outfit Pyramids FC.
“Yeah, it’s tough for us playing every single week, three games in a row. But preparing and recovering are important for us. We have won the league now, and now we can focus on the CAF Champions League.”
The Brazilians will host the first leg in Tshwane. And they will hope to wrap things up in Cairo for the second leg seven days later.
