Kaizer Chiefs looking to ease into FIFA break with win over Golden Arrows

Kaizer Chiefs aim to start the upcoming FIFA international break with a strong performance against Golden Arrows at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Amakhosi will return to Betway Premiership action after a tantalising midweek fixture against Mamelodi Sundowns in front of a sold-out crowd at FNB Stadium.

The Glamour Boys will be going up against a rejuvenated Arrows side, who head into the encounter high in confidence following their last-minute win over Magesi FC on Wednesday night.

Abafana Bes’thende are now at number five with seven points after four matches, while Chiefs are slightly ahead of them in position two with 10 points.

Ahead of the encounter, Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi said he does not need to motivate his players, as they will be going up against a club of Chiefs’ stature.

Mngqithi underscored the significance of winning their games, particularly against smaller teams, as a crucial step towards realising his dream of winning the league with Arrows.

Winning against smaller teams

“For me, every win is important. I always tell people that to be successful in a championship, you must focus more on winning games against teams like Magesi, as those games require extra effort due to the lower level of intrinsic motivation.

“Even if you don’t win against Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Mamelodi Sundowns, but do very well against the so-called smaller opposition, that’s where the championship is.

“I’ve always said that Sundowns’ success in the championship has relied on beating these smaller teams, as we [when he was still Sundowns coach] rarely had seasons where we won all the big matches; however, winning against smaller teams is crucial because they outnumber the so-called big matches.

“So, going into the Chiefs game, I don’t think it’s up to me to motivate them [Arrows players], unlike the game of Magesi.”

In the match against Magesi, Mngqithi emphasised the importance of securing three points. The game is scheduled to get underway at 5:30pm in Durban.
