Kaizer Chiefs should have done better this season – Cavin Johnson

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson says Amakhosi should have done better this season in the league with the signings and the new technical team the club had under Nasreddine Nabi.

Chiefs completed their 2014/25 Betway Premiership campaign outside of the top eight after failing to win against Polokwane City in their last match last Saturday.

The Glamour Boys are currently in position nine, and could end up as low as 11th, should Golden Arrows and Magesi FC win their respective matches this week.

Hot and cold

Even though Amakhosi blew hot and cold throughout the season, Nabi managed to do what many other coaches before him could not. He delivered the club’s first trophy since 2015 when he won the Nedbank Cup to end their decade-long trophy drought.

The Nedbank Cup victory also means that Amakhosi will return to playing continental football and feature in the CAF Confederations Cup next season.

However, Johnson has argued that his former club could have done better in the league and should not have missed out on the top eight with the type of coach and squad they have.

“As far as Kaizer Chiefs are concerned, I do believe that with the signings they made this season and the fact that they brought a new technical team, they should have done better than what they have done… than what they achieved this season,” Johnson said after the La Liga Sporty MVP event in Melrose Arch recently.

Last man to fail

Interestingly, Johnson was in the hot seat at Amakhosi as interim coach last season, when the Soweto giants recorded their worst finish at 10th in the table.

Meanwhile, the La Liga Sporty MVP award was won by Athletic Bilbao and Ghana superstar Inaki Williams for the second season running.

Also in attendance at the event were former South African players Brighton Mhlongo, Sibusiso Vilakazi, and Cameroonian legend Alex Song.

Song, who played for some of the biggest teams in Europe, such as Arsenal and Barcelona, said Williams was the deserved winner of the La Liga Sporty MVP award.

“I’m so happy for Williams because he’s one of the African players who has been doing very well in La Liga for many years,” Song said.

“And that shows the young players that they can have an opportunity to be there and to be part of a great award, to dream to be African Player of the Year in a top league like La Liga.”
