Kaizer Chiefs Toyota Cup opponents Asante Kotoko hunting for revenge

Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed Asante Kotoko as their opponents for the second edition of the Toyota Cup, and the Ghanaians say they will be in search of nothing but revenge.

Amakhosi and Kotoko are no strangers to each other, as they once met in the Vodacom Challenge back in 2001. Chiefs won the highly contested game 3 – 2 on penalties after a goalless draw at Kings Park Stadium in Durban.

Speaking during the launch of the Toyota Cup at the Chiefs Village in Naturena on Thursday, Kotoko chairman Nana Apinkwa Akwasi Awua said that his side would be out for revenge after that Vodacom Challenge defeat.

Great opportunity

“I don’t look at this match as friendly only because since we are both going to be competing in Africa [CAF Confederations Cup] next year, this game will serve as a great opportunity to test ourselves, because we don’t know whether we will be in the same group as them,” Akwasi Awua said.

“So, this game will help us test ourselves for the season ahead. This game will also be a chance for us to get our revenge after Chiefs beat us on penalties in the Vodacom Challenge the last time we were here many years ago.”

Chiefs commercial and marketing director Jessica Motaung also expressed her excitement to host the second edition of the Toyota Cup against Kotoka.

Amakhosi looking forward to game

“I am proud and privileged to announce we are playing Asante Kotoko from Ghana,” Motaung said.

“We played them in the Vodacom Challenge many years ago. We have even had players from Kotoko play in the Chiefs jersey.”

Amakhosi played Tanzanian giants Young Africans in the inaugural Toyota Cup, where they lost 4-0 at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein last year.

This year, Amakhosi will be taking the pre-season cup tournament at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on July 26.
