Mammila says coaching course a step forward

Morgan Mammila, the Chippa United technical director who is coaching with the coaches, says he is empowering himself with the necessary badges and qualifications so that people can stop battering him.

He is one of the up-and-coming coaches who are attending the Caf B Licence coaching course in Ekurhuleni.

Mammila came under a barrage of criticism when he took over as the Chilli Boys head coach earlier in the season. He had not done any formal coaching at the time after just being a CEO at Baroka FC and also at Chippa United. He somehow managed to amass 18 points in the three months he was in charge of the first team.

“People undermined me because I did not start as a typical assistant coach. I was surprised because there were many other coaches like Vusimusi Vilakazi, Papi Zothwane, Musa Nyatama and Jerry Tshabalala, the Mamelodi Sundowns women’s team coach who won the Caf Women’s Champions League, and people did not say anything about qualifications,” Mammila told Sunday World.

“I was ahead of many coaches that I competed against; some had been coaching for 10 years and more. They are still struggling to get 18 points after about seven months. I did it in three months. I am a typical rural boy, and I tell boys and girls in rural areas that they can make it as well.

“I want to thank Safa for this coaching course. We are gaining more knowledge, and it is preparing us for our next career moves. The course is 10 steps ahead, and I take my hat off to Safa technical director Walter Steenbok, who made this happen. It’s not like in the past, when coaches needed to go outside of the country to get these coaching badges. We are happy and proud that Safa is doing it in the country and that South Africa will have a lot of qualified coaches in the future.”

Caf instructor Steve Coetzee spoke about the diversity within the group undertaking the coaching course.

“We are very happy with the mix of coaches present here; you have coaches in the PSL, Motsepe Championship Foundation, Hollywoodbets Super League and the national teams, which is wonderful for group projects because we will have so many different perspectives of the game, from coaching at the elite, semi-professional and international levels,” said Coetzee.

“We are very happy to be conducting the course after so many years. Many coaches have been calling for these courses.”
