Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Tashreeq Matthews is eager to break more records with the DStv Premiership champions by surpassing their incredible historic 72 league points tally.
Sundowns will lock horns with TS Galaxy in their penultimate league match at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga on Tuesday night. The game gets under way at 7.30pm.
In their already record-breaking season, the Brazilians added a new record of 72 points in the Premier Soccer League era after beating Stellenbosch FC 1-0 at the weekend.
They surpassed a record of 71 points they set under former coach Pitso Mosimane during the 2015/16 season.
Downs aim to increase points tally
Matthews, who joined Sundowns during the January transfer window, said the aim is to increase their lead at the top of the log and take their points tally to 78 by the end of the season.
“Reaching 72 points is a great achievement. We made history, but we have the opportunity to go even further and to break it even again,” Matthews told the media.
“This time around, we have two games left. The next game is against TS Galaxy, and we can take the points tally from 72 to 75.
“Then we have one more game, the last game against Cape Town City, and we will have the opportunity to take it to 78 points.
“It feels good to make history and break records as a team, but we have the opportunity to take it even further.”
The former Borussia Dortmund youth product started in Sundowns’ 3-0 win over Galaxy late in April before being substituted in the second-half.
Public spat between the coaches
Matthews admitted that, despite being favourites to win, it would be tough for them to score against a side that he predicts would be defending deep.
“We played them not too long ago, and well, the scoreline was 3-0. Of course, as always, we will have more ball possession, and at times they will go into a low block, and that’s where it will be a bit challenging for us to get through,” he said.
“But of course, we will find ways to get behind the line and in between the lines. We just have to make use of the opportunities to score.”
Fans are eagerly anticipating the match between Sundowns and Galaxy in light of the recent public spat between coaches Rulani Mokwena and Sead Ramovic.
