Kaizer Chiefs dribbling wizard Mfundo ‘Obrigado’ Vilakazi is already setting his sights on participating in the CAF Confederations Cup next season.
Amakhosi will return to continental football after their Nedbank Cup success last season.
They beat Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates in the final and ultimately ended the club’s decade-long trophy drought under coach Nasreddine Nabi.
Amakhosi clinched the Nedbank Cup while Vilakazi was out on national team duty with the SA U20s in Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), which they went on to win, making history by becoming the first group to win the competition.
Hungry for more success
After winning two gold medals in a space of one week, the 19-year-old dribbling wizard said he is hungry for more success at the club and national team level.
Vilakazi added that going to the Confederation Cup with Chiefs will also contribute to and improve his game.
“After winning the Nedbank Cup and U20 Afcon, I just want to continue working hard and pushing for more success both with my club and national team,” Vilakazi told Sunday World.
“I am glad that we will be playing in the CAF [Confederation Cup] next season because playing on that continental stage will help improve my game in many aspects.
“I will also grow as a player and know when and how to play during different phases of the game. So, I just need to remain grounded and focused, and everything else will come as time goes on.”
Happy to have won the Afcon
Vilakazi will also most likely go to the U20 Fifa World Cup in Chile with Amajita, as they secured qualification to the global junior showpiece when they reached the semifinals of the Afcon.
“I am so happy [to have won the Afcon]. I don’t believe it. When we went there, we wanted to qualify for the World Cup.
“Being in the final and winning the trophy is not something we had spoken about because our goal was to qualify for the World Cup, and we did,” he added.
Vilakazi is expected to be part of the Chiefs squad that will be travelling to the Netherlands for a pre-season tour from July 3 to 19.
