Mamelodi Sundowns’ senior coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, will see out his contract but there are no guarantees he will remain at Chloorkop beyond June.
Mngqithi’s future remains a subject of speculation and Sunday World can confirm that there are no talks to renew his contract, which expires on June 30. Mngqithi was this week linked to Orlando Pirates. Previously, he was thought to be on the radar of KwaZulu-Natal club Royal AM.
Speculation regarding his future has gained momentum since Mngqithi was demoted in October. From being co-head coach with Rulani Mokwena, Mngqithi was given the responsibility of being the senior coach, which is essentially third in the pecking order, and Steve Komphela was elevated to second in command as first team coach.
Late last month, Riedoh Berdien (strength and conditioning coach) and Marcus Mashilo (assistant goalkeeper coach) were sent packing from a camp in Polokwane, and Mokwena then hinted there would be more changes given the fact that he’s now in charge.
“For sure, because the club has given me an opportunity for which I’m extremely grateful, and they have given me the support for which I am extremely grateful. And my role is to reward them and repay that,” said Mokwena.
“Part of that is knowing I need a very strong team around me because I cannot do it alone, and that means, for sure, in the interim, is to move in a direction that the club wants to move in.”
Football agent Mike Makaab, who represents Mngqithi, insisted that the experienced mentor remained focused on the job at hand. “Manqoba remains fully committed to Sundowns.”
