Motaung Jnr slams reports of Chiefs’ interest in Bongani Zungu

Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jnr has denounced reports that Amakhosi are interested in signing Mamelodi Sundowns star player Bongani Zungu.

This after news surfaced that the Glamour Boys could make an enquiry and prepare a bid for the former Amiens and Rangers midfielder ahead of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season, which is set to kick off on August 4.

“But why you guys have to lie ka rona [about us] always,” asked Motaung Jnr in his response to a tweet.

“I hope for more positive engagements moving forward that can rather uplift this beautiful sport and industry of ours.”

In 2022, Chiefs were said to be the front runners to land the signature of the Duduza-born star midfielder after parting ways with French outfit Amiens, but lost the race to Sundowns, who tied Bongani Zungu on a three-year contract with an option to extend.

This is despite efforts that were reportedly made by Motaung Jnr of holding several meetings with the player but had to withdraw the pursuit after realizing that Chiefs will not be able to meet personal terms with the midfielder.

The Soweto giants have since announced seven new signings, with their latest recruitment being Venezuelan international Edson Castillo and former Royal AM winger Tebogo Potsane.

Also joining Amakhosi are Thatayaone Ditlhokwe (SuperSport United), Given Msimango (TS Galaxy), Mduduzi Mdantsane (Cape Town City), Pule Mmodi (Golden Arrows) and Ranga Chivaviro (Marumo Gallants).

Meanwhile, Amakhosi have confirmed that they have cut ties with defender Austin Dube after reaching an agreement to facilitate his departure.

Dube becomes the sixth player to leave Chiefs after veteran defender Eric Mathoho, Siyabonga Ngezana, Phathutshedzo Nange, Cole Alexander and Khama Billiat.
