Mothwa wants KZN fans to pack stadium for Bafana fixture

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Veli Mothwa has urged football followers in Durban to give the team huge support on Saturday.

South Africa hosts Benin for a 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifier at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

“The KZN supporters needed this game, and we are bringing it to them,” said Mothwa.

“I know they are going to come out in large numbers to support Bafana because it has been a long time since they last saw the team play at Moses Mabhida.

“For us, and most of the time, we normally play when there are few supporters or less supporters. Fans play a big role for us; they love us, and their support makes it easier for us to win matches.

“So, I invite all the fans to come and see the kind of impact they have on the team.”

The AmaZulu shot-stopper added: “It is important for the team to qualify because we did not make it to the last World Cup.

“We want to go play in the next tournament. The preparations are good so far, and I am confident we’ll be in the World Cup in 2026.”

Mothwa plays second fiddle to Rowen

“It is a nice feeling for me to play nine matches for my country and not concede any goal. We are just waiting to showcase what we are good at doing and we will dedicate this game to the country.

“Come Saturday, we will work hard to make sure that we are victorious,” Mothwa added.

The AmaZulu shot-stopper is part of the Bafana squad who are tasked with the responsibility of qualifying the team for the 2026 Fifa World Cup that will take place in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

This weekend, Bafana will be involved in back-to-back qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda in this Fifa calendar week.

Bafana will face Rwanda on Saturday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban and then travel to Butare where they will play against Rwanda on Tuesday.

The South Africans are in Group C, where they were drawn with Benin, Rwanda, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Nigeria.

Mothwa, who has played nine matches for SA without conceding a goal, wants the KZN vociferous crowd to drown their Benin foes in the stands.
