Nagelsmann leads race to replace Potter at Chelsea

German international Julian Nagelsmann is leading the race to replace Graham Potter after the English manager was sacked following a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly reacted swiftly to yet another disappointing result, after a visibly frustrated group of supporters was seen leaving the stadium before the final whistle against Villa.

The club released a statement to confirm the long-time coming news on Sunday night.

Nagelsmann, 35, is a free agent after being recently shown the door by German giants Bayern Munich following an unconvincing string of results in the Bundesliga.

Despite the sacking of Potter, some Chelsea supporters still feel hard done by Boehly for letting go of Thomas Tuchel, who has since succeeded Nagelsmann at Bayern and has hit the ground running when he led his new side to a crucial 4-2 victory against title contenders Borussia Dortmund.

Here are some of the candidates linked to the Chelsea job:

Luis Enrique

The former Barcelona and Spain national team coach is a free agent and reportedly ready to make a return to club football.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Boehly is a big fan of Enrique’s leadership skills and personality, which makes him a favorable option to take the club to greater heights.

Mauricio Pochettino

Pochettino is once again being considered as one of the candidates for the Chelsea job, after the Argentinian was previously approached by the club to take over from Tuchel.

Pochettino is, however, also linked with a sensational return to his former club Tottenham Hotspur, who are also in search of a new manager after the departure of Antonio Conte.

Zinedine Zidane

Zidane “Zizou” Zidane could be a statement appointment should Boehly land the signature of the former Real Madrid manager. Zidane has been out of work for some time since May 2021 and was previously linked with many clubs across Europe.
