Jose Riveiro will lead Orlando Pirates for the last time when they play Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday night, the club’s management has announced.
Riveiro’s contract was originally scheduled to expire in June, but the club has agreed to release him early so he can pursue a new opportunity.
Riveiro approached the club weeks ago, asking for an early departure after signing with another team, according to Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza.
“Considering the critical fixtures we were navigating, including the Nedbank Cup final, we chose to delay this announcement,” Khoza stated.
“Jose’s impact since joining has been profound. His contributions have been invaluable, and it’s been a mutual learning experience. While we would have loved to honour him with a formal farewell, we respect his decision to leave early.”
The announcement comes after Pirates were beaten 2-1 by Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday, ending Chiefs’ 10-year cup drought.
Riveiro departs with an illustrious legacy, having etched his name into the club’s history with an exceptional coaching record and multiple trophies.
Goodbyes are never easy
Reflecting on his tenure, Riveiro expressed heartfelt gratitude to Pirates.
“I sincerely thank Orlando Pirates for granting me this opportunity to leave early. Goodbyes are never easy, and this moment is deeply emotional,” said Riveiro.
“I’m grateful to the management, technical staff, players, and everyone behind the scenes who works tirelessly for this club. To the players, thank you for embracing our shared journey and giving your all.
“To the supporters, I challenged you to rally behind the team when I arrived, and you exceeded expectations.
“Your passion made every match unforgettable, and I’ll carry it with me always. Thank you for letting me be part of this incredible club’s story.”
The club is urging the Ghost, the ardent Pirates fans, to pack Orlando Stadium on Tuesday for the Betway Premiership match against Arrows to bid farewell to the “Spanish Guitar” as Riveiro’s chapter comes to an end.
For the remainder of the season, assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi will serve as interim coach with assistance from the team’s technical and support staff as well as head performance analyst Rayaan Jacobs.
