Pirates desperate to get back to winning ways in the league

Orlando Pirates will be itching to go back to winning ways when they host high-flying Polokwane City at the Orlando Stadium on Friday evening.

The DStv Premiership fixture will kick off at 7.30pm.

On Tuesday, Pirates dropped points after being held to a frustrating goalless draw by AmaZulu during their meeting at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Riveiro optimistic to catch up with Downs

Despite that, Bucs coach Jose Riveiro remains optimistic that his side is still very much on track to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the league title come end of the season.

“Orlando Pirates got 54 points in the league last season and, usually in South African football, you win the league with around 60-61 points historically,” Riveiro said after the match against AmaZulu.

“But we’re fighting against a team that is exceptional at collecting points, and maybe that makes it look like what we’re doing is minor – but we’re there [in contention].”

Riveiro will be looking to his strikers to be clinical in front of goal, as their defence has been solid and has not conceded in open play for the past five games.

Polokwane City on good form

The Sea Robbers will be going up against a Polokwane City side that has been on good form since gaining promotion to the premiership.

City comes from the back of a win over Gavin Hunt’s SuperSport United, when they walloped them 4-1 and knocked them out of the Carling Black Label Knockout cup competition at the weekend.

The Lehlohonolo Seema-led side currently occupies position five in the league standings with 14 points.

Riveiro and his charges, on the other hand, are languishing on number 13 on the log with eight points.

The Sea Robbers do, however, still have three games in hand and will want to get as many points as possible in their mission to play catch-up to leaders Masandawana.
