Orlando Pirates will, unfortunately, have to wait at least another seven days to know whether or not they will be crowned the 2025/26 Betway Premiership champions, as they could not crack the stubborn Berlin Wall of Durban City, after their frustrating goalless draw yesterday Es’godini.
Pirates are now two points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns on 66 and still have a shot for one last attempt to finally get their hands on the league title.
The Sea Robbers will tackle relegation-threatened Orbit College in their final league match this coming Saturday at the Mbombela Stadium, in Mpumalanga, where they will be handed one last chance to end the reign of Sundowns.
Despite the hoo-ha about Sundowns having to wrap up their season before everyone, this season will be etched into history books as one of the most exciting.
Pirates and Sundowns were on each other’s throats and have taken the title race down to the wire – something that South African football fans last witnessed during the Covid season, when the Pitso Mosimane-led Sundowns snatched the title from Kaizer Chiefs on the last day.
At some point, Amakhosi were in the mix, but their lack of consistency let them down and had to settle for position three.
But, apart from the Buccaneers having a slow start under Abdeslam Ouaddou, the Ghosts bounced back like a ping-pong, ball silencing earlier calls for the lanky Moroccan to be sacked.
For Sundowns, yesterday’s result will give them a huge sigh of relief ahead of their CAF Champions League final first leg against AS FAR, something that may just give them a little bit of oomph this afternoon in Tshwane.
The least said about the crowd and turnout yesterday at Orlando Stadium, the better, as the iconic venue was packed to the rafters. Even the football ancestors of Orlando were probably surprised to feel such an atmosphere, as the Arena, as it is now known, has never been packed as it was yesterday.
