Pirates’ suffering continues as they lose to struggling CT Spurs

Orlando Pirates’ huffing and puffing in the DStv Premiership continues to persist as they dropped points once again, this time to strugglers Cape Town Spurs, crumbling to a 2-1 defeat at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Buccaneers have now dropped seven points in the league in a space of eight days – drawing two back-to-back draws and losing to Spurs.

Jose Riveiro and his side last tasted a league victory on 29 August when they beat Cape Town City 2-0.

Pirates are still languishing on the bottom half of the table on number 13 with nine points after eight games, while Spurs are still bottom of the log with three points after nine matches.

The Urban Warriors finally got off the mark and recorded their first win since gaining promotion to the SA topflight. So, it was more like a bottom of the log clash, as both sides were desperate to get to winning ways.

The Sea Robbers started the game on the back foot and conceded as early as the third minute when Lubeni Haukongo found the back of the net after poor defending from Thapelo Xoki and Olisa Ndah, who misjudged a cross and let it fall onto the path of Haukongo, who made no mistake in putting his side ahead.

Pirates created enough chances to level matters, with striker Evidence Makgopa getting a golden opportunity to equalize, but he failed to sort out his feet after a delicious cross from Deon Hotto.

Moments after that miss, the visitors were punished as Jarrod Moroole doubled their lead in the 36th minute, when he found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi after a lovely cross from man-of-the-match Keagan Buchanan.

Makgopa did, however, make amends for his missed chance and gave his side hope when he scored with a easy header and registered his first goal in Pirates colours.

The tempo of the game was at its highest level in the second half, as Riveiro took the game to the Urban Warriors by making changes and throwing in his attacking players, but it was not enough as succumbed to a frustrating defeat.
