Pirates whip Chiefs as cup drought continues for Amakhosi

Orlando Pirates scored one of their biggest victories this season when they knocked Kaizer Chiefs out of the Nedbank Cup in a pulsating semi-final thriller at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night.

The score was 2-1 after extra time and Bucs advance to the finals.

Chiefs were the better side throughout the 120 minutes but they squandered numerous opportunities that would have seen them win by a comfortable margin.

In the first half, against the run of play, Pirates scored from the only opportunity they created and silenced the vociferous Chiefs supporters.

Kermit Erasmus scored a tap-in after some brilliant work from Vincent Pule on the right.

Chiefs fought back and equalised through Yusuf Maart in the second stanza. Both teams went at each other like warring siblings but goals were not coming.

The match went into extra and the excitement continued. With the dreaded penalty kicks looming, Pirates’ Sandile Mthethwa rose high and headed the ball into the net to make it 2-1.

The goal electrocuted the Pirates grandstand and the fans celebrated wildly.

Pirates will meet the winners between Stellenbosch FC and Sekhukhune United who will play on Sunday.
