Mamelodi Sundowns and their captain Themba Zwane were handed separate fines for delaying kick-off in the MTN8 match against Moroka Swallows.
The two sides met in the quarter-final of the competition over a week ago, which Sundowns won by a narrow 1-0 scoreline.
Zwane and Sundowns appeared before the Premier Soccer League (PSL) disciplinary committee on Thursday morning to answer to charges of misconduct.
Zwane was fined R20 000. Half of the fine has been suspended.
PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu said: “This is arising from an incident in the MTN8 match in which Zwane and his teammates delayed kick-off by approximately three minutes.
“The referee had signaled for the start of the match, [but] Zwane left the centre circle and joined his colleagues to greet supporters.
“That type of conduct is definitely in violation of the league’s prescripts hence it constitutes misconduct.
He said Sundowns and Zwane pleaded guilty.
“With regard to Zwane, he was fined R20 000 half of which is suspended for a period of 12 months on condition that he is not found guilty of the same offence again.
“With regard to Sundowns, they were fined R50 000 half of which is suspended on the same terms. Effectively, Zwane and Sundowns have to pay an accumulative amount of R35 000.
“They were further directed to pay for the costs of the seating and [have been] directed to send a written apology to the league and the sponsors
The apology, said Majavu, “must also be carried on the Sundowns website and the league”.
