Following a man-of-the-match performance against AmaZulu and banging in two goals at the weekend, Kaizer Chiefs forward Pule Mmodi has boosted his chances of regaining a Bafana Bafana call-up.
On Wednesday, coach Hugo Broos will announce his final 23-man squad for the upcoming international friendly matches against Namibia and DR Congo next month.
Mmodi was instrumental in Amakhosi’s 3-0 win over AmaZulu and helped the Soweto giants record their first win of the new DStv Premiership campaign.
After the match, coach Molefi Ntseki heaped praises on the 30-year-old, saying his brace against Usuthu will only boost his confidence going forward.
“I think we brought Pule Mmodi with a very clear understanding that he is a quality player,” Ntseki said.
“We have always said this when it comes to players coming from other teams – but Kaizer Chiefs is a different beast.
“The most important thing is for us to settle, and with him having scored two goals, I think it will help him.”
Mmodi has been a breath of fresh air in the Amakhosi attack since leaving Golden Arrows in July this year and proving to be a worthy investment for a club that is on a mission to end their eight-year trophy drought.
Even though the 30-year-old fell down the pecking order of Broos’ squad selection in recent months at Arrows, joining a club of Chiefs’ caliber and his recent performance against AmaZulu may be enough to earn him a call-up in the Bafana setup once more.
South Africa will host Namibia on September 9 and DR Congo on September 12 in matches that are part of the coach’s preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Ivory Coast in January next year, and for the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers in November.
