Red-hot Downs want the scalp of Durban City after walloping Chippa

After their convincing 4-1 victory over Chippa United on Good Friday, Mamelodi Sundowns will be looking to continue their winning streak when they visit Durban City on Tuesday.

Sundowns reassumed their lead on top of the log after four goals and three points on the night, and at the rate they are collecting points, City, who are sitting in position five, should be worried when the defending champions come to town.

The defending league champions put up one of their best performances which in a way, sends a stern warning, saying ‘catch us if you can’ to Orlando Pirates. Sundowns and Pirates are involved in a cat-and-mouse chase at the top of the league table. Log-leaders Sundowns have registered 53 points after 22 matches. Pirates dropped to second place with 51 points after the same number of matches.

It was goals from Marcelo Allende, Iqraam Rayners, Tashreeq Matthews and Brayan Leon that helped Masandawana grab all points on offer.

According to the Sundowns website, the early minutes of the match were a bit sluggish from both sides, with no clear-cut chances witnessed on both ends of the boxes. It, however, only took 21 minutes for Masandawana to break the deadlock through Allende. He caught the goalkeeper off-guard when he calmly tucked the ball under the goalkeeper to find the far post.

In the 30th minute, Chippa came close to leveling matters from a set-piece effort on the edge of the box. The effort was, however, smacked away by Ronwen Williams. It was then cleared away by Jayden Adams.

Seven minutes later, Rayners doubled matters. He ran into the box to receive the ball from Katlego Ntsabeleng’s supply on the right side. Rayners then redirected the ball with his head into the box.

The visitors finally found their first goal when they beat the Downs defence. It was lobbed into the area, and as Grant Kekana tried to clear the ball with his head, he missed. Chippa then tapped it in past a Williams who was off the mark. No more goals were witnessed in the opening half as Masandawana went to the break with the upper hand.

The Chilli Boys created the first action of the second half, but their effort was cleared away inside the box after a scramble.

Bafana Ba Style continued to dominate and created opportunities in the box. One opportunity came from Rayners after the hour mark when he looked to connect with a ball from outside the area, but he missed the target.

With a few minutes left of regulation time,  Matthews made it three for Downs with a beautiful supply from substitute Teboho Mokoena inside the area. The match was, however, summed up by substitute Brayan Leon, who scored in the 92nd minute. Allende supplied the ball to Leon who tried to drive the ball to the box. It was intercepted but he managed to win the ball back and from a tight angle on the left, he found the back of the net with no defense in sight to clear the ball.
