Stellies won’t make it easy for Sundowns to wrap their eighth title

PSL defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns can wrap up their eighth PSL league title when they face Stellenbosch FC in the Betway Premiership at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium, in Atteridgeville, this afternoon.

Mathematically, if Sundowns get the three points today, they could be crowned league champions, unless second-placed Orlando Pirates win all their remaining matches by scoring more than 25 goals to minus the Brazilians’ massive goal difference advantage.
Sundowns increased their goal tally midweek when they clobbered a hapless Chippa United 3-0 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

The Brazilians are on a high, demolishing everything that lie in their path. They want to finish with the league formalities by wrapping it up in style with three games remaining so that they can focus on the CAF
Champions League final against FC Pyramids of Egypt.
Sundowns will face Pyramids later in the month.

But against Stellies, they will face a well-coached outfit that is brimming with eager and hungry youngsters. In their maiden campaign, Stellies achieved the unthinkable when they reached the semifinals of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Stellies coach Steve Barker said that he is looking forward to the encounter against Sundowns: “Whenever you play Sundowns it will be tough. They are a difficult team to play against. I think they’ve only lost two games this season, and they are one of the best teams, if not the best team in Africa,” said Barker on the club’s website.

“We know that whenever we play them, we have to be at our best and that tactically and technically we will have to execute our game plan really well. Even if you do, they have individual brilliance all around the park, so it will be a tough game.

“We’ve shown ourselves to be competitive against Sundowns though, so we also have to believe that we can go there and get a result and show them that we want to become a team that is challenging for league titles and being consistently good on the continent.
“It’s these types of teams like Sundowns that are a good benchmark for us to see where we are,” Barker said.
