Mamelodi Sundowns duo Themba Zwane and Ronwen Williams say winning the season’s curtain closer will be important in their mission to complete a historic invincible season.
Sundowns host Cape Town City in their final DStv Premiership match at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off time is at 3pm.
Masandawana secured an historic seventh successive DStv Premiership title at the beginning of May. They are now looking to create more history by becoming the first team in South Africa to finish a 30-match season unbeaten.
Reflecting on the successful season
Ahead of their clash with City, Williams reflected on the successful season the Pretoria-based outfit has had.
He also highlighted the importance of taking their last league match as an important match, just like any other fixture.
“It has been an amazing season, especially in the league. We have been nothing short of amazing throughout the season.
“Our consistency, relentlessness, brotherhood and fighting spirit throughout the season have been so key. This game has so many big things to it.
“If we avoid defeat, we will be the first team to get the invincible tag in South Africa. That’s massive and I think we fully deserve it,” Williams said.
Williams also highlighted the crucial role that the supporters played this season. He said it is important that the team lifts the silverware and celebrate this historic moment with the Yellow nation.
Looking to to end the season with a win
“With the hard work and sacrifices we have done throughout the season, I think it would be perfect for us to end the season with a win. Especially in front our supporters, who have been amazing this season.
Masandawana are playing against a City side that is seventh on the log. They will be looking to end their season in a higher position, having cemented their spot in the top eight.
Captain Zwane concluded by praising coach Rulani Mokwena. He said that Sundowns keeps improving under his leadership.
“It’s been amazing to have coach Rulani coach us. He’s an amazing human being. What I appreciate most about him is as a player, you improve a lot when you work under him.
“We always learn from him, and he motivates us all the time. We enjoy playing under him and we are on the happy side,” Zwane added.
