Mamelodi Sundowns will be officially crowned Betway Premiership champions if they get a point or a win against Chippa United tonight (Wednesday 7.30pm) at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London.
The Brazilians have been on a warpath, collecting points in the league title race. And tonight, they are about to reap the rewards of their hard work by stamping their authority in the SA football fraternity by winning their eighth consecutive league title and 14th overall in the PSL era.
Even if Sundowns do not get a point or a win in their last two remaining matches, which is highly impractical, second-placed Orlando Pirates still have the almost impossible chance of dethroning them from the top of the mountain.
Almost a foregone conclusion
Pirates will have to score more than 25 goals in their remaining four matches to edge the defending champions via goal difference. So, it is almost a foregone conclusion that Miguel Cardoso’s boys have already won the league race for the umpteenth time.
But veteran Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango is not complacent. He is aware of the hard work that they still have to do in their last remaining two matches. After Chippa, they will wrap up their 2024/25 campaign against Magesi FC on Sunday.
“The preparations, after playing them [Chippa] a few days ago in Pretoria, went well. The team is looking good. And we know the task that lies ahead of us, which is to win the game. There is nothing we are letting loose. Because we know the importance of winning the game,” he said.
The shot-stopper concluded by encouraging the supporters to come in numbers to support the team.
Calling all fans to come give support
“We are calling the Yellow Nation in Buffalo City to come and support us in big numbers. To push the boys. Because we have been together throughout the journey, and we want to be with you until the very end.”
Last week Wednesday, the two sides played their first-round encounter. And Sundowns thrashed the visitors 3-0 at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium. This was via goals from Iqraam Rayners, Jayden Adams and Thapelo Maseko.
The trio will be looking to finish off from where they left by pumping in more goals. They hope to secure a stylish victory and a classy way of lifting yet another league trophy.
